The Wings

By PWL Painting with Light

In Diegem, just opposite Brussels Airport, property developer Ghelamco has just inaugurated its latest project.  It is a real architectural jewel housing a multitude of functions, such as offices, hotel spaces, and restaurants. The building provides an exceptional living and working environment, offering a diversity of perspectives and experiences, with a profusion of unique and recognizable spaces.

  • At the bottom of the balconies surrounding “The Wings”, continuous LED strips 4 centimeters high have been placed, made up of more than 40,000 pixels 10 centimeters wide.
  • Around 480,000 LEDs are incorporated into these strips, for a total length of just over 4 kilometres. Considerable calculation and programming work was required to achieve consistent and precise dynamic video effects. The LED strips were integrated transparently into the aluminum cladding of the façade so that they would not be visible during the day.
  • Finally, co-extrusion was used to achieve a perfect balance, with the LED strips fixed in a special silicone profile, allowing the building to move freely with temperature variations without affecting the lighting installation. In terms of waterproofing too, a considered approach has been taken, so that there are no visible connections to the outside.
