The concept was to create a calm space on the river.  To avoid the conventional transport infrastructure design choices such as bulkheads and downlights where possible.  Where feasible, concealed lighting was to be used.  The pier stretches 40M out into the River Thames and the linear nature of the structure was to be emphasized.  Linear LED lighting was integrated into all of the handrails and for the seating area into the bench.  The choice of lighting responded to the specifics of each area.  In the canopied embarkation area, linear led downlights were integrated into the paneled ceiling.  This was to ensure that passengers waiting for ferry boats at night would feel like the space is well-lit.  For the covered gangway, downlights and bulkheads were avoided in favour of LEDs hidden in handrails.
