Ottawa Canada by LIGHTEMOTION
Lightemotion created a unique lighting design for the West Block, a historic building at the heart of Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct. This project came with a big challenge: illuminating this neo-Gothic gem without altering its heritage masonry. Using a discreet border lighting system from the ground and well-integrated fixtures, every architectural detail—gables, turrets, and chimneys—is beautifully highlighted.
To add a sense of life, a “lantern effect” was designed, with amber lights glowing through the windows, giving the impression of an inhabited building. This design, both innovative and respectful of history, earned Lightemotion two prestigious lighting awards in 2024.
This project is part of a larger plan to light up the Parliamentary Precinct, including the East Block and the Centre Block. With its approach that blends light and history, Lightemotion doesn’t just illuminate buildings—it tells a story, one that celebrates architecture and its heritage. This work nicknamed the “Jewel in the Night,” shines a light on the beauty and grandeur of this iconic Ottawa landmark.
The West Block exterior lighting project was recognized with an Illumination Award for Outdoor Lighting Design and an Award of Distinction from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) during the 51st Annual Illumination Awards.
