Lyon Palace of Justice

By Jérôme Donna

The Lyon Palace of Justice is an iconic architecture of the city. He is often found on the postcards of the Fourvière hill. Designed by architect Louis-Pierre Baltard, in the 19th century, its peristyle of 24 Villebois stone columns is more than 20 meters high.

How did Jérôme Donna, lighting designer at the Directorate of Public Lighting – DEP – of the city of Lyon work with the architect of the historic building to define the lighting project? Rather than a heritage highlighting of the Palace of Justice in front that would have multiplied the shadows of the columns, the lighting designer comes to the service of the building to restore a more complete image. Jérôme Donna’s proposal is to:

  • make sustainable and event lighting with the same installation,
  • return white light-based materials to respect the stone,
  • integrate the luminaires into the monument so that they are not visible during the day,
  • integrate into the general nocturnal plastic of the Fourvière hill.
