Historic Lombard Bridge

The Lombardsbrücke in Hamburg is a historical landmark that connects the inner and outer Alster in a central location. Our lighting concept aims to make the newly renovated building shine in new light by combining its historical significance with modern lighting technologies.

The basic idea of the concept is the emphasis on the bridge as a harmonious unit, whereby individual details are specifically highlighted. The placement of the luminaires emphasizes the horizontal structure of the bridge, while the vertical illumination of the pillars reinforces their presence in the overall picture. The atmosphere along the balustrade and in the passages creates a deeper perception of the building and emphasizes the bridge as a total architectural work of art.

Special attention was paid to the integration of modern technologies and the monument-protected status of the bridge. Supply profiles have been developed that accommodate the technical equipment and luminaires unobtrusively along the bridge. In addition, the historical elements, such as the gas lamps in the passages as well as wall chandeliers and candelabers on the bridge were reconstructed in cooperation with metal builders and glaziers and thus integrated into the lighting concept by monument protection. In terms of lighting, it has been optimized to ensure that the previously free-radiating glass lamps are equipped with a directed light unit, so that as little scattered light as possible enters the sky.

The light control allows a fine-tuning of the light intensities as well as light colors to be able to respond to the natural changes of the sandstone. This is done in close cooperation with the Light Advisory Board of the City of Hamburg.
